“Throw It On Him”
Jalee Rice
Many may not know this, but in high school, Ken was quite an athlete, particularly in shot put. I found this track and field sport to be interesting as the participants would “wind up” while holding a sixteen-pound cannon ball near their shoulders and, using force, expelling the metal ball as far as possible down the field. I suppose it would almost be like attempting to throw a bowling ball overhand. You get the point.
“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” - Psalm 55:22
As I have been meditating on this scripture the past couple of weeks, there have been a number of questions that have captured my imagination. Follow me here.
“Lord, isn’t it selfish that I’m constantly throwing my cares [about fill-in-the-blank] to You?”
“Don’t you weary of constantly apprehending my daily cares, anxieties, complaints and worries?” Imagine this for a moment; The LORD of our life has struck a heavenly posture to gladly receive the cares of this life. In fact, it is an invitation that He extends to each of us to throw, cast, or hurl those things that weigh us down.
Let me ask you, what is your prevailing burden today? What anxiety are you shouldering? What is keeping you up at night? What situation are you ruminating relentlessly over? Isn’t it time to consider the gracious offer of a loving Father? It’s time for us, as children of God, to do some work.
Not to state the obvious, but I think it bears a reminder to us that the offer is not for Jesus to approach us and relieve us of our burden. Rather, the appeal is for us to get down-to-business, and heave our weighty burdens into the arms of our strong and Mighty God. He is waiting to take our burdens and, in exchange, He promises to sustain us. We only need to throw it on Him.
