Not Enough Hours in the Day

Tyler Thornton

Do you ever feel like there just isn't enough time in the day? That there is so much you want to do, yet there just isn't the time to do it? I have been finding myself thinking that a lot lately. As a result I find myself rushing from thing to thing, task to task, and still barely being able to fit in all that I seek to accomplish. Where does the time go?!? I sought to fix my conundrum by hurrying through life. I thought this would be the solution, but it was in fact where I was missing the point! I read the book “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” by John Mark Comer a while ago and it changed the way I looked at prioritizing my time. I would highly recommend giving it a read! In his book he talks about the detrimental ways hurry impacts the life of a believer and how living on pace with Jesus changes the way we see our time.

Dallas Willard once called hurry “the greatest enemy of spiritual life in our day” and called followers of Jesus to “ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” While I often think a quicker pace, or a more hurried lifestyle will allow for more freedom to do the things I want to do, it actually does the exact opposite. Hurry puts urgent over important and draws our focus to the things that are on our calendar instead of the things going on around us.

The calling to slow down is not easy in the time we live in, yet we as Christians are called to it. Everything we do should be for the glory of Jesus, and not to put a check next to a to-do item on our agenda. It is counter cultural and yet aligns perfectly with the Kingdom. Slow down, abide in Jesus, and time will work itself out.

Colossians 3:15-17

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
