1,000 MPH
Mindy Simmons
I recently came across a video that stated that Earth spins at a speed of about 1,000 miles per hour. Now, I’m sure my elementary school teachers taught me this decades ago, but I don’t remember this fact specifically. And, being the trust-but-verify-type person that I am, I had to Google it myself, and yep, the surface of Earth at the equator moves at a speed of about 1,000 miles per hour in order to rotate once per day. Wow!
What’s also a little mind-blowing is that not one of us feels like we are standing on a surface that is spinning that fast, thanks to the amazing power of gravity holding us close to Earth’s surface and the constant rate of speed. I am reminded of how incredible God is to create this for us, and how He oversees it all.
Colossians 1:16-17 says: “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I really do feel like the world around me is spinning at a high rate of speed. Time is passing by quicker than I’d ever imagined, it’s dizzying trying to keep up with all of the demands on my time, energy, and emotions, and I wish I could just press pause on a magical remote control that will give me a few moments to breathe and wrap my head around the situation before I have to rejoin the race. In times like this, it’s so comforting to remember that God holds us close.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand...For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” - Isaiah 41:10,13
Just like gravity keeps us from flying off into space, remember today that God has a firm grip on you, and you can keep your heart and mind safely grounded in Him.
