Aha Moments
Mindy Simmons
Have you ever had an “aha moment”? I had a couple of these happen to me recently.
Last Friday morning I was chatting with some friends, and I mentioned that my youngest daughter was going to take her driving test the next day. My friend then said something like, “oh, so today was probably the last time for you to take her to school, huh?” Woah. That was an “aha moment” for me….in the rush to get out the door and get her to school, it hadn’t occurred to me that I was probably experiencing something for the very last time that morning. That realization hit me hard.
A few days later, my husband and I went over to the home of some new friends and had a great time. Hanging out over dinner, the conversation naturally progressed to deeper levels, and at one point my husband shared with them his coming-to-faith story. The other couple was moved to hear about the “aha moment” when he realized his need for God, and found salvation.
The dictionary definition of an “aha moment” is a moment of sudden realization, inspiration, insight, recognition, or comprehension.
As my husband shared his story with our friends, I found myself reflecting on my own faith journey. I was one of those kids who grew up in church, and I can’t pinpoint the specific day or place that I first gave my heart to the Lord. But I can certainly recall times as a Christian where I’ve had major “ahas” that revealed something important about God’s character, brought me freedom, helped me understand God’s love for me, or anchored my faith.
The longer I’m a Christian, the easier it is for me to forget about those foundational steps in my journey with the Lord. Reflecting back on those moments, I am filled with thankfulness to God and joy in remembering all God has done for me.
What about you? Can you think of any “aha moments” in your faith journey when you were first saved, experienced freedom, or truth was revealed to you? I encourage you to take a few moments to reflect on those, allow God to remind you of His goodness in your life, and thank Him.
