Align Your Heart With God's

Tyler Thornton

Have you ever felt a deep ache in your heart over something? Maybe it’s an injustice you witnessed, a personal struggle, or a situation in the world that you can’t seem to shake. Anytime I hear “In the Arms of an Angel” accompanied by pictures of sad animals in a commercial I can’t help but want to adopt every animal I see! Our hearts often carry heavy burdens, and it’s natural to feel deeply about the things that impact us. But when we feel that tug on our hearts, it’s important to pause and ask ourselves a crucial question: Does God feel the same way?

If the answer is yes, then we have a powerful opportunity to respond as Christians. We can seek God’s guidance on how to act, how to bring His love and truth into the situation, and how to be His hands and feet in a world that desperately needs His touch. But if the answer is no, we need to ask ourselves why we’re allowing this to consume our thoughts and emotions. What is it about this issue that has captured our attention, and is it something that aligns with God’s heart?

This process of discernment is essential in our spiritual walk. It helps us prioritize our concerns and focus our energy on what truly matters to God. But how do we know what breaks God’s heart? And how can we align our hearts with His?

The key lies in intimacy with God. The more we draw near to Him, the more we begin to see the world through His eyes. We are all influenced by those we spend our time with. Whether that be our friends, coworkers, or spouse, they naturally impact the way in which we see the world and the things we care about. Imagine being intentional with the ability to spend every moment of your life communing with God! How quickly our hearts would be quickened to the things that God is passionate about and how motivated we would become to be used powerfully in the world around us.

In a world full of distractions and demands on our emotions, it’s vital that we take the time to align our hearts with God’s. When we do, we find clarity, purpose, and peace that transcends our circumstances. We begin to see the world the way He does, and we’re better equipped to respond with His love and compassion.

This week, I challenge you to take inventory of what’s on your heart. Ask yourself, Does God feel the same way? Then, seek His guidance on how to respond.

End with this prayer:
Lord, create in me a clean heart. Life is so complicated, busy and chaotic. But amid the mess, please give me the strength and courage to see people, places, things, and events through Your lens. Please guide me and change me, oh God. Please give me Your heart for others and the world around me. Each and every day, help me to see, through Your eyes, the truth of what is, what has been, and what will one day come. In the name of Your son Jesus I pray, Amen.
