Quarantine Fads

If you are anything like me, you have been staying up to date (maybe too much!) with social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or Snapchat. I feel like I have known more about my friends in the past three weeks than I ever have before; what 10 things they surprisingly don’t like, odd jobs they’ve held in the past, musical artists they’ve seen. We have played the “How well do you know me” quiz. We have shared our homeschooling strategies. We have lamented over our loss of sports and the daily schedule.
I have noticed that each day presents a new “fad” to learn or try during the quarantine. So far I have tried the whipped coffee (I didn’t like it), baked more goodies than I normally do, played quarantine bingo and had fun with “I Spy” with my camera roll. Some of these activities require little to no human action but what I have been seeing a lot of, is that people are using this in order to reach out to each other. Humans crave social interaction, sometimes whether they realize it or not. I believe with all my heart that when God created the world, He did not intend for mankind to be alone. He wanted us to have friends, a family and a spouse.
While I have enjoyed following these fads and learning more about my friends, my hope is that Jesus would be the new fad. Have you ever noticed that when people go through a time of need, many ask for prayer? People who aren’t Christians, who don’t believe in a God. People, who on a normal day, wouldn’t take the time to even think about Christ. These people are on social media asking friends and family to drop a word to the big guy in the sky. I believe we are born with an internal desire to follow the One who created us.
My prayer is for us, as the church, to lead by example and create the biggest and best fad of them all. To turn our family, our friends and our country back to where it all began, Jesus.
