Eight Life-Shaping Priorities
There are eight times in the New Testament were we are told to “make every effort.” It turns out that these eight exhortations form a solid life plan for maximum impact and fulfillment.
They are wisdom.
As you consider the list, it could be very wise to study each passage for a deeper sense of what God has in mind for us. It seems to me that this list is a powerful summary of the life-skills necessary to flourish with God and man.
Here are eight life-shaping priorities:
Enter through the narrow door. (Luke 13:24)
Do what leads to peace and mutual edification. (Romans 14:19)
Keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:3)
Enter God’s rest as an act of obedience. (Hebrews 4:11)
Live at peace with everyone and be holy. (Hebrews 12:14)
Add to your faith. (goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection and love) (2 Peter 1:5)
Confirm your calling and election. (2 Peter 1:10)
Be found spotless, blameless and at peace with God. (2 Peter 3:14)
Like the Ten Commandments, this list strikes me as a brilliantly wise and simple strategy for life. This sets us up for emotional peace, relational depth, vocational success, and vitality of soul.
The important thing is to see our faith in Christ as the starting line of our new life, not the finish line. When we bow our knees to the Lordship of Jesus, we have only just begun. The adventure is on and the game is afoot.
Make every effort - to follow Jesus with intentionality, discipline, and joy!
