Studies Show Singing Is Gonna Fix Ya
David Reyes
βLet the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.β Colossians 3:16
It appears that singing, particularly in groups, has significant health benefits. According to a study conducted by the advocacy and research group Chorus America, "Singing in a chorus has a powerfully positive impact on people across generations, as well as on the communities in which they live."
The context of the report is specific to choral (or ensemble) singing. However, the report highlights what I and many others have long assumed, singing with other people has positive health benefits.
The study found that singing decreased feelings of loneliness while reducing stress and helping sharpen memory functions. In a nutshell, singing with others makes you feel better.
It's no wonder that singing played such a huge role in the bible. From Genesis to Revelation, God has used singing or music in some form or another for his purposes.
Here are some key facts about singing in the bible:
Singing was used to help people memorize God's laws (Deuteronomy 31:15-22)
Jesus is a singer (Matthew 26:30, Mark 14:26)
When God rejoices, He sings. (Zephaniah 3:17)
There is much singing going on in heaven (Job 38:7, Revelation 5)
There are countless instances of people singing or making music to exalt God.
Singing is an integral part of practicing our faith (Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16)
So, what does this all mean? Well, maybe you should sing a little. I believe that singing is most beneficial when you are singing God's praises. When the fruit of your lips is gratitude rather than complaints, God is magnified, your spirit is lifted, and your soul is restored. So give it a try at our next gathering or an Oikochurch. I bet you'll come out of there feeling so much better!
