Can God Be Trusted?

Ed McClanahan

As I sit here, my wife continues to battle an auto-immune disease called Guillain-Barre’ syndrome. GBS is a rare neurological disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks part of its peripheral nervous system—the network of nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord. GBS can range from a very mild case with brief weakness to nearly devastating paralysis, leaving the person unable to breathe independently. So far, she’s been blessed with a moderate case that hasn’t included any paralysis. Ironically, she got the disorder from her Covid-19 vaccine. In her attempt to protect others, she got sick herself!

Like most people, we’ve wondered about the reason, as if God needs to have one! But through it all, I continue to sense the Holy Spirit saying “Do you trust me?”

Proverbs 3:5-6 says: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Philippians 4:6-7 says: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Sometimes these things are easier said than done. We certainly know plenty of folks who are dealing with much worse circumstances than we are. Whether it’s a cancer diagnosis, a sudden unexpected death to a loved one, or the loss of an entire home as we’ve seen from the recent fires, tragedies can be found everywhere.

Isaiah 26:3 says You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.

Let that be us Lord, let that be for all of us!
