Psalm 91
Mindy Simmons
With school starting up this week for many students in our community, it certainly feels like fall has arrived! We recently welcomed our Evergreen Christian School staff back to campus, and several of us have had the privilege of joining them in a time of communion and prayer. Principal Angela Flores led this session by reading Psalm 91, and then we spread out and prayed in each classroom, for every student, parent, staff member, and guest that will enter our school during the year ahead. Since then, this Psalm has continued to stick in my heart and mind, and I recommend that you go read the full chapter.
I found encouragement in this beautiful reminder of God’s protection. We can trust Him fully, even during uncertain times or troubling circumstances.
Psalm 91 (select verses):
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you
from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.”
I know that I can fully trust God with everything. Yet, when I examine my heart and mind, I realize there are areas where I don’t demonstrate that I truly do trust Him. I operate in my own strength, try to solve problems on my own. I tend to be afraid or worry about things, or I stress over things that I have little to no control over. But God can be trusted, and there is so much peace that comes from releasing those burdens to Him. Take a moment today to remind yourself to trust God. Picture yourself resting in His shadow, under His wing, fully protected and loved, with nothing to fear.
