Song Story: Breaker of Our Chains

Song Story: Breaker of Our Chains
We have a new song we have been singing as a church the last few months that I had the honor of writing called “Breaker of Our Chains.” I figure this could be a great time to share the story behind the song.
The song is based out of Psalm 24. It’s a great and short passage I encourage you to read, but here’s a passage I want to highlight.
7 Lift up your heads, you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,
the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
The Lord Almighty—
he is the King of glory.
The whole psalm proclaims that God is the one who founded the earth and all the universe. And we are the generation of people who come to worship him. I wrote the song thinking about all of the people a part of our church. All the experiences, backgrounds, and lifestyles people come from. Everyone has such different ideas and opinions, but then we come to Christ, and we become a part of one body. When we come together to worship, we are united as one. It’s such a powerful experience. There is nothing like the people of God coming together to proclaim the power and goodness of God. And to acknowledge our desperate need for Jesus.
I wrote this song believing people needed to be reminded that Jesus has broken their chains. That is the common thread for all of us. We were chained to our sin, and he came and destroyed them! We were blind, now we see! This is why we sing and why we serve him. Hopefully it’s been an encouragement to you.
Lyrics:
Verse 1
All the world is Yours
Carried by Your hands
Young and old will come,
With humble hearts and bow To You
Chorus
Jesus lord of all
Breaker of our chains
Jesus lord of all
We lift our hearts and sing
For He will always be Lord of all
Verse 2
Lift up your heads
Raise up you gates
Open ancient doors
And see the Lord is here with us
Bridge
Sing all you people
Sing for all ages
Sing to the Lord our God
The Lord strong and mighty
King of all nations
Sing to the Lord our God
